It’s Been A Chilly May…
It’s been chilly this May. Last May, just after we had arrived, it was much warmer. We were sitting outside enjoying the quite hot days most of the time. This year by contrast it’s been rainly, windy and a lot cooler.
We expect that when the heat finally comes it will come with a bang! I’m not sure if I’m ready for it yet. I kinda like the not too hot days, as long as they are not too cold either.
I was dumped by The Shetland Times this week. The new editor just told me, “I no longer wish to run your column. I am making a series of changes to the paper and that is one of them.” No word of “thanks” for the 10 plus years of writing for them, first with the Northern Outlook column, and latterly with the Spanish Outlook column.
I knew the column wouldn’t run forever, and I knew I wasn’t going to get a gold watch and chain at the end either, but I did expect a word of thanks. Just a simple token of appreciation. All I got was nada!
I asked the new editor, some upstart called Paul Riddell, if I could have the chance to close the column properly. You know, one last column to summarise how thing have been and how they are, and the chance to say thanks to everyone who read the column. Mr Riddell didn’t even have the courtesy to answer my email. That’s nice, isn’t it?
So, that’s one of the last ties with Shetland broken off. I thoroughly enjoyed writing the column, and we found a good use for the money I earned doing it too. But don’t look back, as they say. Onwards and upwards! be nice to everyone and ignore the bastards who don’t have the decency to be nice to you.
